Amateur players are being offered the possibility to earn A$1m when they face world-class athletes - featuring world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a single-point showdown prior to January's Australian Open

Organizers of the Melbourne major have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will pit everyday competitors against elite athletes in a single-elimination format at the tournament grounds

How the Tournament Functions

Participants must play 'the decision-making game' to establish who takes the serve or return position, and the player who wins the point will move forward to the next round

The victor of the event will take home a significant cash prize

Contextually, players who made it to the final four of the main draw competitions in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The US Open hosted a revamped, separate mixed doubles tournament in late summer which motivated top singles players to compete, with the winners receiving one million US dollars

The Melbourne tournament held its first-ever single-point competition this year, but the cash prize was A$60,000 and it received minimal attention

The Russian player was the sole elite competitor competing, and his run finished when he directed the sole serving chance allowed failing to clear the net in his penultimate round

Competition Details

Planners have not said exactly how the event will operate, but it is projected to follow a similar format to this year's edition

The top competitors will be granted to make one service and the amateurs on two occasions - as is the standard practice in standard play

While it is not certain how the bracket will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the venue will be the main stadium rather than the alternative court

The final stages will take place in a night session instead of midday timing

Entry Details

Local players - or international players who have registered with the national federation - can enter 'One Point Slam' tournaments at their neighborhood facilities

The champions of the local competitions will then go into a selection process, with one amateur player from every geographic division chosen to compete in the 'grand finale' in a night session on mid-January

There will also be a entry tournament in late year which non-professionals, developing professionals, well-known figures and sport stars can compete in

It commences on Monday, 12 January and the successful competitors will go into Wednesday's 'grand finale' with the remaining non-professionals and top-ranked athletes

"No matter your experience, the overall victor will walk away with the reward. Applications will open soon at clubs throughout the nation"

Competition planners stated there were "more big names to be announced soon", while the tournament site said "celebrities" would be participating
