Israelis have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions said that an evening round of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Key Points in Discussions

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Future management of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see all home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of the music event, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the evening falls, the fear arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city indicated additional dead people had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers said.

The territory's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
